Setting Intentions to Move Your Job/Career Search Forward

Last week, I had the pleasure to attend Marcia Wieder's Dream Coach University and learn a whole new set of tools and distinctions to help my clients move forward towards their dreams in their careers and in their lives in general.

One of the useful distinctions that came out of the week was the concept of setting intentions.

Basically, when we set intentions, we make it clear to ourselves and others what we want and what we're planning to do about it. If you subscribe to the notion that language is generative of realty, by the very act of declaring an intention, you change your reality in that very moment.

For instance, I've been very slow to get back to blogging after 10 days away from the office for vacation and this training. This morning, I set the intention to make an entry before the day was out and - voilĂ !

Setting intentions can be very helpful in the job search as well. Having trouble getting yourself to make those calls or send e-mails to request informational interviews? Set an intention right now for how many you're going to get done today and then tell somebody about it. Then keep your eyes and the prize and act with integrity - i.e., carry through with your intention and make contact!

Big Growth in Solar Energy in San Francisco?

According to the San Francisco Business Journal, The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved an ordinance establishing a Solar Energy Incentive Program to encourage the addition of 35 megawatts of solar power in the city over the next ten years.

San Francisco's program is designed to piggyback on other solar incentives available from the state and federal government.

The Board of Supervisors must vote to approve the program on second reading at their meeting June 11 and if they do, San Francisco residents will be able to begin applying for the incentives -- made retroactive to December 11, 2007, when Mayor Gavin Newsom first announced the program -- as early as next week.

This could very well lead to increased business for solar equipment and installation suppliers serving San Francisco, a well as jobs for people interested in working in the solar energy industry. Stay tuned (or keep an eye on the San Francisco Business Journal for further updates).

Some thoughts for the day on finding a job

Some thoughts for the day on finding a job:
  • Don't rely solely on internet job boards and headhunters
  • Tell everybody what kind of work and organizations you are looking for
  • Identify and network into target organizations
  • Stay connected with people by participating in group activities, volunteering, sitting on a non-profit board, running a charity activity, etc.
  • Consider starting a professional BLOG and personal resume web site
  • Research target companies and departments thoroughly, identify challenges where you can be of value, and make a targeted pitch to the hiring manager
  • Leverage existing networks: undergrad and grad school alumni, religious and cultural communities, circle of friends and acquaintances, on-line networks (LinkedIn, Plaxo, etc.).
  • Don't let fear of rejection or lack of confidence hold you back.
